Checklist for Teacher Preparations for Sixth Grade Field Experience

At least two weeks prior to the trip, teachers need to:

 

  1. ___ Introduce watershed concepts included in From the Mountains to the Estuary: From the Schoolyard to the Bay Curriculum to students.

     

  2. ___ Schedule two buses as early as possible (two weeks minimum) before visit. The program starts at 9:45 am and ends at 1:00 so the buses will have to be booked from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

     

  3. ___ On site lunch option: schools that are located within close proximity to the E.A.G.L.E.S. Center have the option of eating a picnic lunch at the Center. The buses would leave at 1:45 to head back to your school.

     

  4. ___ Send permission slip home with students, collect money for buses, and organize chaperones (optimum of 1 per 10 students)

     

  5. ___ Fill out PWCS field trip form
  6. ___Divide the number of students attending trip into either four groups (Occoquan) or six groups (Mansassas).

     

  7. ___Make name tags for your students. Groups shall be easily identified by either numbers or different colors or shapes on name tags.  

     

  8. ___Gather supplies to bring on bus including:
    1. _____ Large Garbage bag for bus
    2. _____ Hand wipes.

 

 

On the day of the trip:

 

___Have students use the restrooms before getting on the bus (Restroom facilities are VERY limited.)

 

___Have permission slips, emergency forms, garbage bag, and hand wipes for bus.

 

___Place two groups (Occoquan) or three groups (Manassas) of students on each bus. There must be a Prince William County Public School employee on each bus!

 

For Occoquan Site only:

 

One bus will travel directly to the E.A.G.L.E.S. Center located behind Belmont Elementary School. The other bus will go to the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

 

EAGLES Center drop off- your group will be dropped off at the gravel driveway which is located in the bus loop at Belmont Elementary School. A teacher will be waiting for your group and will walk them back to the E.A.G.L.E.S. Center.

 

Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge drop off- A teacher will meet your bus at the entrance to the Refuge, the bus will follow them back to the field site.

 

At each site, the students will rotate between two different learning stations. The students will be at each station for 40 minutes. Please see enclosed itinerary.
