interpreters


The B-WET field experience for Prince William County students relies heavily on the participation of the cadre of retired teachers (ROPers) as well as experienced educators and students from George Mason University. Below are required forms and materials for all GMU Field Interpreters:

 

  1. Application for becoming a field interpreter for this project. 
  2. A GMU volunteer form for interpreters serving in a voluntary or intern [unpaid] capacity.  
  3. Wages employee forms you need to complete AND submit before being eligible to be paid by Mason, each form is listed separately below.
  4. A 3-part video orientation for ALL new interpreters, covering "What is a MWEE?", on-line resources and logistical issues (about 20 min each).
  5. A tentative work schedule providing assignments for scheduled and substitute interpreters for each field experience during the current academic year. 
  6. FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER on excursion dates, please see work schedule for instructions on whether or not our sessions are occurring. 

 

NOTES:

1. All interpreters need to submit either a Mason volunteer form or wages employee forms. (If you have questions regarding your status as volunteer or wages, please contact Dr. Cindy Smith, csmitc@gmu.edu

 

a. Returning project employees: Please contact Dr. Smith regarding any paperwork which might need to be re-submitted for the new academic year. 

 

***Returning Field Interpreters, even those who worked in Fall 2012, must fill out the online forms in this new GMU rehire packet.  Once completed and saved, please email the rehire packet to Joanne Andersen Zimmerman janders8@gmu.edu.  In the Subject heading place: Returning PW Field Interpreter (your name) or Returning FX Field Interpreter (your name).

If you worked on both the FX and the PW program please list that in the text of your email.

 

b.New GMU Wages employees: Please print and bring the forms listed below with you to the Program Orientation meeting on Wed. Sept. 12, 2012 in David King Hall, Bio Rm 3005 at either 10am - 12:30pm or 1pm -3:30pm.please visit the part-time online orientation for more details, Dr. Smith if you have any problems.

 

1)     Bring printed, but NOT signed I-9 form + the required types of identification, (Please bring valid ID: one from List A or one from List B and one from List C) on this document:http://hr.gmu.edu/forms/FormI-9.pdf

c. All employees and volunteers: Please deliver your signed forms (without I-9) to Ms. Joanne (Andersen) Zimmerman| Dept. of Environmental Science and Policy  | GMU | 4400 University Drive | David King Hall, MSN 5F2 | Fairfax, Virginia 22030-4444. You can also scan and email them to her if your I-9 is already on file with Mason. Joanne will be available at the orientation to accept your paperwork.

 

d. All employees: Please submit your forms by the outset of the semester in which you are serving as a wages employee (Sept 12 for Fall or Feb 15 for Spring). You will NOT be paid for work done before you submit all of your wages employee forms. Your status will be considered that of "volunteer." Failure to do so may result in your being ineligible to receive wages from Mason for this project in future years as well.

 

e. IN ORDER TO BE PAID ON TIME, hourly wages employees must use PatriotWeb to record and sign-off on your timesheet hours before the end the two week pay period in which you worked (i.e., last Friday of that pay period, as shown on the PatriotWeb form).  On your timesheet, you must SAVE your hours on each day worked AND click SUBMIT FOR APPROVAL if you wish to be paid.  If you have questions regarding how to submit your timesheet, please read through this manual. 

 

 

2.  Project Orientations meetings: To learn more about the project and to finalize paperwork, Interpreters are requested to meet Dr. Cindy Smith and Ms. Joy Greene, on Wed. Sept. 12th  from 10:00am-12:30pm OR 1pm - 3:30pm in the Biology Conference room 3005, in David King Hall on the Fairfax Campus (see campus map)  If they haven't submitted forms already please bring them to the program orientation.  If you are not on campus, the best places to park without a permit are either in the Mason Pond or Shenandoah or Rappahanock parking garages.

 

3. Environmental Field Safety Training.  GMU workers are HIGHLY encouraged to attend Environmental Field Safety Training on either Thursday Sept. 6th, or Monday Sept. 24that 2pm-3pm at the Police & Safety Headquarters, 4393 University Drive, rm 230.  This is a one-hour class is supplemental training for personnel who work outside of the traditional laboratory environment. This training will instruct participants on topics such as field hazard identification, appropriate attire and personal protective equipment for field work, vehicle safety, chemical safety in the field, specimen collection and transport. If you can not attend one of these sessions, please contact Sarah McAbee <sgillett@gmu.edu> regarding another available session time. 

 

 

4. New interpreters are expected to attend field training on either Tuesday Sept. 18th or Wednesday Sept. 19th 2012  9am - 3pm (if not attended previously).  Each training day everyone will meet at the Pavillion in Manassas Battlefield, (near the parking area on William Centre Blvd which is just off Groveton Rd) at 9am, run through program activities and then travel down to Occoquan Bay refuge for the afternoon training. Bring a lunch or pick one up along the route to Occoquan Bay. Interpreters must arrange for their own transportation to and from worksites throughout the field season.
